History and Development

Establishment of the Faculty

The history of FAAS Universitas Diponegoro began in 1962, when the Minister of Higher Education and Science, Prof. Dr. Ir. Thojib Hadiwidjaja, suggested to the President of Universitas Diponegoro at that time, Mr. Soedarto, to establish the Faculty of Animal Science. The suggestion arose after seeing the fact that Central Java has great livestock potential and therefore needs to be developed. For the development of livestock, educated and trained experts are needed through education at universities, namely at the Faculty of Animal Science. On the other hand, at that time there was not a single university in Central Java that had a Faculty of Animal Science, and even if there was, it was only one of the Departments, namely the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.

The good advice was responded to by Mr. Soedarto as the President of Universitas Diponegoro who then approached various parties. After some time, the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Diponegoro was formed with the Decree of the Minister of PTIP No. 37 of 1963. The composition of the Committee consisted of: Drh. Soejono Koesoemowardojo, Inspector Head of the Central Java Provincial Animal Service as Chairman; Drs. Lts. Soetopo Andar, Kesdam Officer as Secretary, and as members respectively Drh. Rustandi Danumihardja, Head of the Semarang Residency Veterinary Service and R. Suprapto, Head of the Central Java Provincial Agriculture Office.

There are many problems faced by the committee, including: cost problems, teaching staff, lecture halls, laboratories and equipment. However, thanks to the tenacity and seriousness of the Committee and the support of various government and private agencies, the existing problems can be overcome step by step. So with the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science No. 75/1964 dated July 17, 1964, the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Diponegoro was established on September 1, 1964.

Opening of Study Programs

In subsequent developments, considering the potential of the fisheries sector in this area and the great opportunities for development, in 1968 the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Diponegoro was developed by opening the Department of Fisheries based on the Decree of the Rector of Universitas Diponegoro No. 44/1968 dated October 8, 1968. Thus, the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Diponegoro has 2 departments, namely the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Fisheries.

Since August 17, 1974, the name of the Faculty of Animal Science of Universitas Diponegoro was officially changed to the Faculty of Animal Science and Fisheries, which was later established its status based on the Decree of the Rector of Universitas Diponegoro No. 76/SK/UD/VI/78 dated June 3, 1978. However, after the issuance of Government Regulation No. 5 of 1980 and Presidential Decree No. 51 of 1982 dated September 7, 1982 which was followed by the Rector’s Circular Letter No. 14/PT09/1983 dated March 24, 1983, the name of the Faculty of Animal Science and Fisheries of Universitas Diponegoro was changed back to the Faculty of Animal Science with 3 Departments (each managing one Bachelor program), namely: (1) Department of Nutrition and Animal Feed,  (2) Department of Livestock Production and (3) Department of Fisheries (Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0551/0/1983 dated December 8, 1983).

On July 25, 1994, the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0181/0/1994 was issued concerning the Opening of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Diponegoro. As a follow-up to the implementation of the Decree, the Department of Fisheries separated and became a unit of knowledge with the Marine Science Study Program and formed the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences. With the establishment of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences; Therefore, the Faculty of Animal Science only has 2 Departments, namely: (1) Department of Nutrition and Animal Feed and (2) Department of Livestock Production.

In 2012 the Faculty of Animal Science planned to open the Department of Agriculture with study programs, namely the Bachelor of Agroecotechnology Study Program, the Bachelor of Agribusiness Study Program and the Bachelor of Food Technology Study Program. Therefore, the name of the Faculty of Animal Science was changed to the Faculty of Animal and Agriculture Sciences based on the Rector’s Decree No. 724/SK/UN7/2011 dated December 8, 2011.
